Club Captains Report - Dave Parmentier

Redmen,

Firstly, I want to say a big congratulations on your efforts on Sat….both on and off the field.  Great rugby by every team, followed by a pub crawl in Balmain – what could be better!  All grades played well despite injuries and resulting numbers shortages.  I especially want to thank the Colts that backed up to play in grade sides; it doesn’t go unnoticed, especially when you play so well.

Obviously we’re now into the second round, at this stage of the first round weather caused some disruptions to both training and games, forcing us to play Baker boys on the long weekendOur next two rounds are very winnable across the grades, to do so, would give us a much need buffer on club championship points and more importantly provide the opportunity to really have some fun on the field.

The feedback we’ve had from the new training format has been positive; starting on time at 6-45 with well structured and varied club drills, followed by team runs; short, sharp, hard and fun!   Let’s enjoy the next few weeks by getting to training (stick around for beer and a cheap steak after), play some hard rugby and smash some old foe.

Don’t forget LADIES DAY & GALA DAY will be on 16th July (against Mosman) - bring a date and her mate!

Congratulations again, let’s take it home from here with a wet sail.

Jersey Rant No.1 of..............

I first came into contact with the slim fit jersey back in the early 2000’s (I think) at the Cowra 10’s. The OIC (Officer in Charge) Jersey procurement had sourced a set of (GREEN FOR F**KS SAKE) Mungo jumpers from God knows where, that required a team of three men just to get over my impressive abdominals and left me gasping for breath in a manner I suspect would be not unfamiliar to the heavily corseted women folk of Victorian England. Fortunately I and several others of similar build managed to rapidly attach ourselves to the Cudal Pythons who, while lacking both  the numbers to make up a side and the ability to catch OR pass a football, did have a bag full of extra extra extra…..extra large, cotton jumpers.
So I’ve had some time to think. And I have some theories.
Unshockingly, several of them revolve around the central idea that this is some kind of organised conspiracy directed first and foremost at the Front Rower. Seriously, hasn’t anyone noticed how fragile they seem to be getting these days. You haven’t got time to turn around and another waif like modern prop’s body has collapsed under weights previously laughed at by MEN whose neck and backs were supported by a physique that while eminently suitable for the packing of scrums and the tossing aside of lesser individuals with the ease of a stiff breeze through dry autumn leaves, just look RIDICULOUS in the modern Rugby ‘Jersey’.
Today’s style of girly man attire makes it impossible for appropriately proportioned Props to compete in the modern game. It was not fitness or form that killed off Matt Dunning’s international Rugby career. It was in fact an inability to continue bending the laws of space time in order to accommodate his XXXL body into the XXXS Jersey provided to him by those bastards from the ARU.
And where’s the drive to succeed gone these days? The best bit about winning a GF always used to be wearing your jersey to death afterwards. How in God’s name are you supposed to saunter into the local pub or mow the lawn or whatever in your old jersey when you stopped fitting into it five minutes after you ceased training 8 days a week . The only nice thing that can be said about the current trend is that you can mount the damn things in an A4 certificate frame and fit more of them on your wall (that and maybe the ability to wash a whole Clubs worth in one extra large load).
Evil bloody things….

5th Grade Report - Drummoyne

Gents,

Well done on beating Drummoyne last weekend. 8-0 result to the good guys.

Keeping Drummoyne to nil was heartening, as they had a lot of possession in our red zone and our defence was excellent. We came off our line with good speed and met all their attack on the front foot. The backs, in particular, showed a marked improvement in defence, lead by Boggy and Matt Curtin who both put in some great hits.

It was great to have legendary Redman , Matty Thomas, on the paddock again! Matty showed all his skills have not yet left him!

A big welcome to Patrick Menary, who scored a meat pie in his first game for the Redman! Well done Pat!

Granvil, thanks for organising the 2 colties to help us out, they both played really well!

We won all grades but 1st v Drummoyne, despite having over 40 guys unavailable across the grades. It showed the club has great ticker with plenty of guys backing up and helping out when needed. First grade put in a great effort against the Professionals from Drummoyne, despite being outweighed by about 10kg per player and missing a lot of regular 1st graders!

This week’s round is v Barker OB at Ryde.

Kind Regards

David Bryant (Happy Hooker, now starting to regain movement in neck and shoulders)

4th Grade Report - Drummoyne

Greetings gallant Redmen,
The Old Ignatians Juddernaughts showed great composure and determination to secure a 22-17 victory over Drummoyne at Drummoyne Oval and keep the team well in contention for a semis spot.
With many players again unavailable across the grades, Lucas Baker (2nd grd) and Gavin Akers (3rd grd) took to the field to help out. Steve Naughton (9) opened the scoring in about the 6th minute after disrupting the Drummoyne half back at the back of a scrum, scooping up the ball and running 35 m to the line.
Drummoyne soon hit back, though, scoring out wide, but the Juddernaughts were starting to work more cohesively, winning possession and moving the ball around. After some great support play and recycling the ball, Matt May (5) made a decisive break before putting  Mike Bailey into a huge gap and over for another unconverted try. Before too long, the Juddernaughts attacked again and with the back-line ready and set, Baker ignored the 3 man over-lap to beat 15 defenders and barge over for a  17-5 lead.
Chris Pascoe (2nd row) and colt, Josh Allen (prop), replaced Baker and Akers at half-time, conceding nothing. Baker soon had to come back on though, to replace Cal Docherty(3), who had been out for a month due to injury and illness. A tough effort from Cal.
As expected, Drummoyne came out hard in the second half and soon scored a converted try despite some good defence. However, Old Ignatians continued to play 15 man rugby and on several occasions looked dangerous only to be foiled by an unlucky bounce or misdirected pass.  Instead,  Drummoyne had some luck and equalised with about 8 minutes to go.
However, to their credit, the Juddernaughts  regrouped, regained possession and moved into Drummoyne territory. Then after maintaining  pressure, Matt May put through a grubber kick for the Old Ignatian full back, Tim Naughton to dive on and score the match winner.
There were many fine performers, Tommy Droulers (6) again busy at the breakdown and winning lineouts, Mike Bailey directing the backline from 5/8 and the centres Andy Lukas and Olly Trustler solid in mid-field, whilst the newcomer from the USA, Clayton Passero, looked dangerous with some room to move.
Points went to: Matt May and Lincoln Aurisch (2) – 1pt, Hayden McHugh (8) – 2 pts, Lionel Hayden (7) – 3 pts.
Congratulations Redmen and we look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening for training when we can work on our combinations, skills and strategies and build momentum going into the back end of the season.
Cheers
