4th Grade Match Report - Beecroft

G'day mighty and humble Redmen,

In an entertaining display of 15 man rugby, the 4th grade Juddernaughts dominated in most areas of the game to score a bonus point 22 to nil victory.

Missing 4 regulars from the back-line due to injury, promotion, weddings etc, two colts, Harry Davison (10) and Matt Curtin (12), were thrown into the fray and played with aplomb, easily outgunning their opponents, whilst Cameron Davis (13), having his first game in 4ths, troubled the opposition every time he got the ball, making some telling breaks and putting his support players away on long runs. Tim Wheeler (15) injected himself in attack early, as Old Iggies swept 60 metres upfield for their first try and set the tone for game. With a competent first half referee, Old Ignatians went to half time with a 17 -0 lead through tries to Matt May and the King brothers, Al and Ben.

There was a change of referees at half time, and despite his best efforts, this helped Beecroft little as our dominance increased in the scrum and at the tackle, whilst Al King continued to win our lineout throws and pinch most of theirs. We got at least one tighthead scrum win, and continually put enormous pressure on the Beecroft half back. However, we were heavily penalised at the breakdown despite dominating in the tackle and this certainly stopped us from gaining any sustained momentum. Despite this, still we were clearly the better team and this was exemplified by another fine, lengthy team try, finished off by some precision passing and running by the backline which saw Tim Wheeler, having a superb game, collect the 5 pointer.

The last 5 minutes were interesting as, in my opinion, the referee lost the plot. He gave numerous penalties to Beecroft even though we were smashing them in defence and in the scrum. Beecroft spent that last 5 minutes camped within 10 metres of the try-line and despite us having two players sin-binned in that period, our defence did not let up and Beecroft's score remained NIL.

The scrum was dominant, pillar and post solid, our backline defence was superb with Harry Davison really helpful in communication and the centres of Curtin and Davis tight as a snare drum. The line-outs belonged to Al King who also had a great game on the ball and in the open. Chris Hingston (7) had a fine game, as did Matt May who continues to cause havoc with defensive lines and puts in some solid tackling, whilst Tom Droulers worked tirelessly.

I am not so sure our infringements increased in the second half, but the penalty count against us certainly did. We can't do much about referees who make mistakes other than respect their decision and immediately move on to the next play, but we must continue to improve our discipline.

All-in-all, gentlemen, a superb team effort, playing a sterling 15 man brand of rugby and a handsome victory, putting us in a good position on the table (below).

Don't forget Wednesday training will be short and sharp, about 40 minutes, then we head over to the Royal for a steak and some beers and watch the State of Origin match.
Congratulations.
