OldIggies 4th grade Juddernaughts were too skilful and fast in scoring 8 tries in a 52-0 thrashing of Beecroft and have restored a 3 point buffer over 2nd place Colleagues at the top of the competition table.
Despite regular No 8 Bart Oswald having to move to the front row, the forwards soon dominated their opponents with Naughto (9) getting great service to feed the free and hard running backs. B’croft commenced proceedings by kicking out on the full but then OI were penalised at the scrum on half-way. Strange that before kick-off B/croft wanted uncontested scrums but then changed their mind. Anyway, OI won the lineout and kicked into B’croft territory. Beecroft worked their way over the halfway before losing possession. W ith the Juddernaughts first taking the ball to the right and with quick recycling, Naughto then went left to Bailey (10) who passed to Julian who sliced through and raced away to score in the 5th minute, with Naughto converting. B’croft’s restart then didn’t go the 10 and from the scrum win on halfwayOI again went right before the ball went through the hands out to left winger Brennan who raced 40 metres down the touchline to score. B’croft tried to work their way into the game but turned the ball over again in the OI’s half, Bailey quickly going on the offensive before passing to Julian who got outside the defence and raced 60 metres to score. 2 minutes later and from a lineout on the OI’s 22, the backline attacked again with first Bailey and then Julian making ground before Morgan Sparkes (13) took the last pass and scored, Mike Bailey being successful with the conversion. A couple of minutes later the OI scrum put the pressure on, B’croft won untidy ball which the backs couldn’t secure and from the turn over Julian gave a great pass to put Brennan away down the left wing to score again with Bailey converting making it 31-0 at halftime.
It took OI 8 minutes into the 2nd half to post their sixth try of the match during which time several promising raids were foiled by forward passes. Nonetheless, the Juddernaughts maintained the pressure and Morgan Sparkes collected his second try when chasing hard after a Matt May grubber kick dived desperately to secure the touch-down. 4 minutes later OI received a penalty on their own 22. Andrew Adorini (1) got the Juddernaughts on the front foot with a charging 15 metre run from Naughto’s quick tap kick and from the quick recycle the ball went to Bailey then Julian then an inside ball for Matt May to score. Then came another exhilarating try when after B’croft had recycled the ball 5 or 6 times inside the OI half but couldn’t find a way through the defence, they put a grubber kick through which was fielded by winger Pat Brennan 10 metres out from OI tryline. Brennan offloaded to Matt May who then drew the defence and passed back to Brennan backing up on the outside and who raced away down the left to score his hat-trick try in the corner from where Mike Bailey kicked his 5th conversion from 5 attempts.
Max Cordony from colts had a fine game at No 8 as did Matt May(6) and Tommy Droulers(7), who again secured several turnovers and was brave under the high ball, while 2nd rowers Fessey and Pascoe enjoyed dominance at the line-out and the front row of Adorini, Oswald Quinn/Griffiths set the platform for a dominant OI scrum.
Players points: Matt May and Pat Brennan – 1 pt each, Max Cordony – 2 pts, Sam Julian – 3 pts
The team’s next game, being the last of Round 1, is against defending champions, Colleagues, who are also unbeaten in season 2012.
