JB

I'll spill the beans in a couple of days - maybe a fabulous prize.... ie a beer from JB before the test on Sat night!

first guess - Mick Fahey
"Third grade, maybe 1987 or 1988. Lost Final at Macquarie uni"

(2 of 4 points correct, but not really the key significance!)

2nd guess from Guy Coleman

"i think its the first 4th grade side"

(definitely no cigar there...."

From Tiges.
Brown ball?
1st year of the current jersey design?
Dan Shilo receding 1 year out of school?
Marc Coleman playing?
Year was 1988.

Tiges - correct re ball.

Another guess from Tiges,
Julian Facer
"1st field at View. Up a dvision. Against Lindfield"
John Bain ERR ERRRRRR tiges - interesting guess but wrong on the location (opposition is right!!) See my comments on your blog post as well... still waiting for the right answer though (Noddy was close)

Tiges is getting close
Julian Facer (quoting the website - shrewd ploy Baldrick)
"In 1987 1st Grade won the McLean Cup and deciding that winning 1st Grade premierships was in fact one of the better ways to spend time at the end of a football season, the Barraclough, in 1988. Hardly satisfied with that success, we also took out the Club Championship in that year booking the Club's place in 1st Division for it's 20th season. MAYBE???

John Bain warm very warm

I believe it is the 1990 2nd grade team. I am wondering why Stowey is in 2nd grade, but there is Tim Smyth (bottom left, a Newington hooker who kept Phil Kearns out of 1st XV at school), Stewie Thomas (Bottom right, Barker boy from the bush)Moosie Marshall, Cluey Clugston, Coach Controversy, Jamie Costello (my centre partner in the losing 1988 2nd grade GF team), Jonesy, Noddy O'Brien and War Horse Little. Richard Stowe was one of the best centres that has ever played for this club - an absolute sensation, and a great fellow as well.

Other guesses

Gareth Davies
The OIRFC picture can't be 1987 or 88 because Owen's in it and he didn't come to Australia until 1989. As to its significance......

John Bain
very good on the year Gareth!!

Adrian Kiely Macquarie Uni is the place

Correct!!

THE ACTUAL ANSWER
1989 Whiddon Cup (Third Grade) Before their minor semi defeat against Lindfield at Macquarie Uni.

1989 was the first year in First Division so this team was our first initial inaugural debut First Division Semi Finalist.
There you go...
