Nicknames I Have Known...

There was a guy who played for the Club a few years ago (a Colt I think), whose nickname was ‘The Rock’ (or maybe just ‘Rock’). I don’t remember his actual name which isn’t that much of a problem because if your nickname is ‘The Rock’ who gives a damn what your real name is (I think it was Quinton or Julian (sorry Tiges) or something similarly effete).

My nickname on the other hand, from about 1991 onwards, was ‘Pancakes’ - Courtesy of either Guy Coleman or Mick Fahey both of whom are distinctly lacking in embarrassing nicknames themselves (‘The Juggler’ being more of a CV than a nickname). Bastards.

Not just ‘Pancakes’ initially which is bad enough (‘Ooh. Look at that fat bastard. He must eat a lot of ‘Pancakes’….which I do, but still) but ‘Pancake Balls’ because given the size of my thighs (which were actually fairly civilised at this time) my balls must surely have adopted the shape of……you get the picture.

I think this was my second year at the Club. You have to ask yourself how we retained any personnel at all given this tendency to humiliate new and talented players (I also remember a Prop by the name of John who spent all of 3 hours with us before The Broom realised during the Team announcements that his surname was Thomas (no relation). How we laughed).

And like that tattoo of Donnie Sutherland you got at 3 in the morning to celebrate the 2001 (undefeated) 5th Grade premiership - once it’s on you you’re stuckity stuck stuck. The closest I ever got to ridding myself of it was being periodically referred to as ‘Sandy’s Husband’ (also ‘Fat - Word Beginning With C That Shall Not Be Mentioned’….which I never minded so much as it was usually coming from an opposition player not so happy about being behind us on the scoreboard…….or Tancred.

Could have been saddled with ‘Boggy’ I guess.

Matty...I do recall at one stage during my career as CC reading out the teams and trying to give everyone a nickname. At the time I was referred to among other things as Loganator, so for anyone I couldn't think of a nickname for, I simply added "anator" to their name hence a slew of Anators eg Pethonator, Duffinator, Sherronator ad infinitum.

I was also responsie for Mike Bailey as The Weatherman (too easy really), and Liam Callaghan as The White Zinzan, which later became just Zinny.

The most apt nickname I think was The Dart, which described Steve Arcus' scrumbase maneuvres perfectly.

And for sheer aptness and rugby wit, you can't beat "Granville". Hello Mickey P.

Logarelli.

Who can forget "Simon the Likeable" (Robbie Palmer.)
And as for Fahey and Coleman missing out, what about 'Moof' 'Easter Island' and 'Fatboy'.
Broom speaks for himself (quite nicely really).
Andy Randall being called 'Cadbury' (glass and a half).

Yours in Rugby
