Tim Hickey - Injury Update

We were saddened yesterday with a major injury to Tim Hickey.

Tim was playing in his first game for Old Iggies.  He made an amazing diving tackle on a Drummoyne player at the same time they were performing a backline switch.  Whilst in mid-air Tim was swung around and hit the Drummoyne player breaking his leg.

Old Iggies President Greg Easy went to the hospital this morning to see how Tim was going.  He was happy to report that he was in good spirits and understandably disappointed.  Greg advised:
"Just a quick note to advise you all that I have been in to see Tim this morning and he is in good spirits but still in some pain. I left the hospital as he was being taken into theatre.

He has a clean snap of the femur and will be having a plate inserted into his leg. He will be out of if today and will be in hospital for the next couple of days depending on how he responds. He will need support from us as a club so please ensure we can help out where possible."

Our thoughs are with him and we hope for a full and speedy recovery.

Put you hard earnt on Rowie

IT was only a lowly midweek two-year-old race but first starter Rowie's win at Randwick's Kensington course yesterday meant as much to trainer Paul Messara as any major race success.

An emotional Messara revealed after the race that the promising two-year-old was named in honour of his late friend, Andrew Rowe, who lost his life last year after suffering a heart attack.

"Andrew was only 35 and as a fit as a fiddle, no one could believe it," Messara said.

"He left behind four young kids -- it's still very sad to think about it and it does put everything into perspective. We worry about so many things in life but all that really matters is your health.

"This win means so much to me -- I think we had a little help from upstairs."

Rowie is part-owned by Andrew's father, Paul, along with Racing NSW chairman and Arrowfield Stud supremo John Messara and John Leaver. The striking chestnut colt had trialled impressively in the lead-up to his debut and didn't surprise the trainer with his powerful win.

"We've got a good opinion of this colt, he's going to make a very nice 'miler'," Messara revealed.

Rowie is superbly bred by Flying Spur out of Tazkara, one of the eight mares standing at Arrowfield Stud under a joint venture with the Aga Khan.

"This is the first of that group of Aga Khan mares to race here," the trainer added.

"Rowie was strong late in his race and will improve a lot with this experience. We will probably take him to Brisbane for the winter carnival and look at a race like the T.J. Smith Classic."

Messara revealed his top three-year-old Rekindled Alliance has come through his close second in the Tulloch Stakes in great order and will definitely take his place in the $1.5 million ATC Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Rekindled Alliance looked set to win the Tulloch Stakes only to be over-powered late by Polish Knight but Messara has no doubts about his colt's ability to stay the Derby distance.

"We will ride him patiently and I'm certain he will run the 2400m right out," Messara said. "In the Tulloch Stakes, we had to make a long run and Polish Knight got a lovely trail behind us.

"Importantly, Rekindled Alliance has pulled up really well and I'm looking forward to the Derby on Saturday."

Messara's stable star Ortensia has arrived in England after winning the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at the World Cup meeting in Dubai late last month. Ortensia is being prepared for the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and Messara is now revising original plans to give the mare a lead-up run prior to the Ascot feature.

"She's arrived in England safely it's nice and chilly, only about nine degrees over there, but we have her rugged up," he said.

Who Stole My Socks

15 years ago
Back in my University days in Armidale I shared a floor with Damien Smith. "Smoothy" as we knew him then went on to represented QLD and Australia as a winger.

My mate Jimmy O'Brien of Old Iggies Halligan Cup fame was also on my floor and every week would accused Smoothy of stealing his socks.  It was not a sinister thing . . .  we all left our stinky socks in a college drying room and just took whatever was on offer . . . .  Jimmy being notoriously slow would be left without any socks each weekend.

Yes he is still bitter  . . . . and I don't think the fence between O'Brien and Smith will ever be fully mended.

Last Weekend
Well it seems a similar thing happen the other day to Andrew Logan.
Loges reports thast he had 2 sets of OIRFC Socks stolen by Tana Umaga and James Grant in a recent game played between the Australian Baabaas & the Australian Police.

Trials Report - St Pats

Greetings gentlemen,

Finally for the first time this year the OIRFC hit the playing field for trials v Pats at Strathfield.

Colts coach Micky Palmer has a big and talented squad already well drilled and kicked off the day with 3 impressive 20 min periods.

The senior Redmen planned for 5 x 20 min periods, with the usual idea of lower grade players starting first. There was at least a dozen new guys to the club
to consider and we quickly strung together a team with a mix of new(*) and old for the 1st game:

The interchange was used frequently due to the particularly warm clime and the desire to watch certain players in different positions. I thought our performances were surprisingly competent considering the total lack of any team trainings prior to today. But our guys know how to play rugby and all of the new players performed. Most, I believe, will play 3’s and higher.

During the fifth period Pats surprised us when they revealed a fresh, professional-looking, 1st XV expecting a further 60 minutes. We negotiated down to 40 min, Gus rallied the troops and put together a team who dug deep and went out and gave it to the opposition. Pats may have “won” 2 tries to nil, but the skills, guts and commitment of the Redmen were the highlights. Indeed, the defensive work by all the teams was committed and strong all day, but some very strong club spirit emerged when asking the guys to dig deep for the last “game”.

Our next assignment is trials v Hunters Hill (1st grade and colts only) on Wednesday 4th April (colts to kick off at 6.30pm), with the whole club to go to Boronia Park. We shall need to communicate effectively over the next couple of days to nail down exactly what we want Wednesday night.

Training this Saturday

Redmen,

A solid training session was had at Rushcutters Bay Park this evening by 30+ senior Redmen, including new recruits, and another 30+ colts.

The season start is fast approaching and we need to be prepared for that opening game on 14th April.

We have not been able to secure a playing field for this Saturday. Instead, there will be a 1 hour fitness/training session Saturday, 9.00 am at Primrose Park, Cremorne.

Training will be on again next Wednesday, for the last time this year, at Rushcutters Bay Park, starting at 6.00pm and then we have trials v Pats at Hudson Park Oval, Strathfield, Saturday 31 March from 12 midday.

The following weekend will be Easter, the Saturday after that will be 1st comp game v Drummoyne at Ryde International Oval.

So gents, please make the effort, if you’re not otherwise engaged, to get to training next Wednesday (and this Saturday) so we can prepare for the trials v Pats.

As for Subs payment, the fee will rise from $200 to $250 after the end of the first round of matches (not after the first match as previously stated).

· Over solid performances considering the lack of numbers and the amount of injured players. With some extra commitment to the 3rds and 4ths pushing higher grades the results could have been a lot better. Numbers at training were a real issues and something the club needs to consider moving forward.

Note:
The addition of the assistant secretary role is to assist Lucas with communication to the club, and support other roles as required.  The club has locked away several social functions but still requires a person to drive these events.

Closing Notes

Season 2012 will be another challenging year for the OIRFC for various reasons. One of the most obvious reasons is that of the payment of cash to players within selected clubs. In my opinion this has split the competition into 2 categories and will continue to destroy suburban rugby in the years ahead.

Other key elements for our club in 2012 will be the lack of players in key positions, which for us is the front row. It’s a very important message that the club needs to distribute to our greater community, so that we can encourage players to return to play with OIRFC.

Players that have finished playing grade and still have that 2 or 3 years left in them, whereby they can come back and play with school mates and make new friends / contacts and finish their playing days in suburban rugby. Suburban Rugby was build upon players being able to play good rugby without the major commitment of grade and higher level rugby.

Play because you love the game and the mates you make.
