Old Ignatians 4th grade continued their good form from last weekend with a convincing 27-7 win over Barker Old Boys.
In a dominant 1st half display, the Juddernaughts, were quickly on the front foot and into Barker territory before Cal Docherty barged over in the 4th minute for his second try in 11 seasons. Beat that!
Whilst our set play was solid, it was in general play when the Redmen side looked dangerous . The forwards were maintaining good structure, recycling the ball before quickly unleashing the backline, superbly conducted by Mike Bailey at fly-half. In the 13 minute and from a kick chase, Old Ignatians secured a turn over and , after a couple of probing hit-ups, the back-line was unleashed with winger Ben King going over for a fabulous 65 metre team try.
4 minutes later and again after a couple of hit-up starting 60 metres out, Mike Bailey made a big break before passing to King who then put Matt McPhie (12) away for a 15-0 lead. Barker were still making a contest of it and managed to score a converted try before half-time after a rare defensive lapse.
The half-time talk made an interesting scene with captain/coach, Steve Naughton, needed to play 3rd grade, delivering his instructions from the physiotherapist’s table as he was being strapped. Having the luxury of a full bench, Chris Pascoe replaced Matt Smith in the second row while Lincoln Aurisch replaced Paul Bova at hooker. Pat Bodimeade had already replaced Hayden McHugh due to injury early in the game.
In the 2nd half the Old Ignatians were quickly back into stride, holding off Barker’s raids, regaining possession then forcing their way upfield. In the 8th minute with a wide open side from a scrum 40 metres out, Mike Bailey looped McPhie before giving the ball for Ben King to score his second try out wide in an absolute classical and rugby play executed with precision and finesse. Beautiful to watch.
Barker continued to contest, but the Redmen remained stout in defence with McPhie and Tim Dodd (13) giving nothing away in the centres and Tim Naughton always tidy at the back. The forwards were still strong at set play and the breakdown, with Tom Droulers having a fine game in the loose and the line-out and Lincoln Aurisch making some strong surges. The Juddernaughts finished the game after another attacking raid saw Bailey grubber in behind the closing Barker defence, Tim Naughton (15) chased and toed through and won the race to dive on the ball in goal for our only converted try.
Points went to:-
Adrian Harrison (9) and Chris Wilkins (4) – 1pt
Mike Bailey – 2pts
Tom Droulers (6) – 3pts (and guzzler)
The team is still in 5th place (see table below), 1 pt behind Pats and 4 pts ahead of Lindfield whom we play next and who yesterday beat Beecroft 27-0. This Wednesday is state of Origin again and usually nobody comes to training.
Gents, please make the effort this Wednesday. Just a short run then we’ll head over to the sponsor’s alehouse and watch the game. Well done and see you Wednesday.
