Hello gallant and gracious Redmen,
After a tough game and a nail biting finish, the Old Iggies Juddernaughts secured a bonus point 24-19 victory over St Pats Old Boys and leap-frogged them into 4th spot on the Judd Cup table (see below) with one game to go in Round 1.
In the early exchanges, the scrum proved it was superior to Pats who had plenty of big forwards but who lacked skill and speed. Pats made some gains, but the Redmen were defending strongly and getting out of their danger zone comfortably. After about ten minutes, from a ruck win near halfway, McPhie (15) put in a kick behind the defensive line for Ben King to chase, gather and score.
The Redmen were looking the better side, with Matt Leech (12) charging hard up the middle and almost getting his support away, Al King was dominating the line-outs, Akers(4), Woodger(1) and Shero(3) were doing plenty of the hard work and some ball was getting out wide and territory gained. However, ball security let us down on occasions and a change of possession was seized upon by Pats who scored an uncoverted try, followed a couple of minutes later by another try again against the run of play and after an unfortunate knock-on. Half time and 12-5 to Pats.
The second half started off positively for the Redmen who contested hard for the ball and looked to move the big Pats players around. Soon, after a 3 or 4 phase build up, the ball came to Leechy (12) who made a steaming 35 metre break and set up his outside centre to score a converted try. Shortly after the kick off and further, fast recycled ball, Al King was away on another 30 metre break up the Western side and, retaining possession at the breakdown, Naughto sent the ball to the backline where Matt McPhie threw a timely dummy, sliced threw and dived in to score another converted try.

Pats tried to lift but with Hayden McHugh (8) and Tommy Droulers(6) securing loose ball and turnovers, the Juddernaughts attacked and again swept upfield and, after sustained pressure, Naughto dived over for a 24-12 lead.
Pats came back to close the gap to 24-19 to make for an interesting last 6 minutes but with consistent strong defence, important communication and common sense rugby, the Juddernaughts prevailed. Much credit should go to the side for not panicking at halftime but rather regathered and, in believing in themselves and their team-mates, played some fine, 15-man rugby to snatch the game away from Pats and set up a match winning lead.
Dave Mower (10) also had a fine game while Matt May(7) and Matt Leech constantly troubled the defence. Points went to Tom Droulers -1, Gavin “the Gavinator” Akers – 2, and Matt McPhie - 3.
Next game is v Barker Old Boys at Turramurra Oval, Eastern Road, Turramurra over the long weekend. Please advise (again) asap if you are unavailable.
Congratulations, see you Wednesday at training and let's consolidate by rolling BOBs on Saturday.
